Dr Maryam Ghorbankarimi

Senior Lecturer in Film Practice

Profile

Maryam Ghorbankarimi is a filmmaker and film scholar whose research focuses on the representation of women both in front of and behind the camera. Her first monograph, (2015), examined the shifting representation of women in Iranian cinema and the contributions of female filmmakers. Her current research explores transnational cinemas and cultures, particularly the representation of gender, identity, and sexuality in Middle Eastern cinemas.

Her edited collection (2021) was published by Edinburgh University Press as part of the ReFocus series on international directors. Most recently, she co-edited (2024) with Michelle Langford and Zahra Khosroshahi. She is also the co-editor of the forthcoming volume , which further develops her research interests in Iranian and diasporic women’s filmmaking, transnational art cinema, and feminist visual culture.

Maryam is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has designed and introduced a number of practice-based film modules that combine creative production with critical and theoretical engagement.
