What is MARS?

MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems is a UK centre for research and teaching in mathematics underpinning applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to real-world systems. It is funded by a £22 million strategic investment from Research England and Lancaster University.

Our vision

To be an internationally-recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching at the interface of machine learning and applied mathematics, transforming the fundamental understanding of AI and driving innovation with real-world impact.

Our mission

By combining applied mathematics with cutting-edge AI methods, we will develop effective, reliable and trustworthy solutions that have positive economic, environmental and societal impact. Through strategic partnerships with academia, industry, and government, we will build a centre of excellence in next-generation mathematics and AI, driving innovation and developing the talent pipeline needed for a more secure, sustainable, and resilient future.
