pro2 2024
The inaugural pro2 network+ Device Prototyping and Production Summer School was hosted on 10th-12th July 2024, and welcomed individuals - academics, industry-based, and hobbiests alike - to come together and meet like-minded individuals for a three-day event centred on "isotyping".
pro2 2024
pro2 2024 involved a variety of opportunities to network, keynotes by industrial and academic professionals, opportunities for delegates to pitch and showcase their prototypes, and masterclasses on coding with Jacdac and the BBC micro:bit. The event was very successful, with some 30 delegates in attendance.
pro2 2025
The second pro2 Summer School ran from 15th-18th July 2025, was once again organised by Professors Steve Hodges and Joe Finney, and Dr Lorraine Underwood from Lancaster University and Maura Lydon, Matt Sutton and Sarah Hughes from the pro2 network+. Welcoming some 40 delegates from a range of institutions, countries, and industrial backgrounds, it boasted an expanded portfolio compared to the 2024 iteration.
pro2 2025
The pro2 school hosted the usual keynotes and coding tutorials, in addition to a surface mount assembly and soldering practical held in the Engineering labs. Additionally, there was an opportunity for delegates to participate in a competition to receive funding to further develop their prototypes. The competition for funding resulted in 14 participants receiving £200 towards prototyping costs for their inventions, with a grand prize of £1000 awarded to Benjamin Seleb from Georgia Tech for his “TinkerTrap” wildlife camera.
BEST Workshops
The BEST workshop sessions were run by academics associated with micro:bit in Malaysia, in partnership with Sunway. The team delivered 8 days of student workshops with around 160 students and their reachers in attendance over the course of the event.
Queen Elizabeth Awards 2026
The micro:bit team collected their Queen Elizabeth Prize for Education from their Majesties the King and Queen at a special ceremony held at St James’s Palace, in London. The nation’s highest education honour was awarded to the Lancaster University team for pioneering work that is helping to drive a global transformation in digital literacy.
Campus in the City 2026
The MIRL team made an appearance at Campus in the City, held at MoreMusic in Morecambe. They helped to welcome some 700 children and families from Lancaster, Morecambe, and beyond and get them doing some hands-on coding with a variety of micro:bit powered devices.
Windermere Science Festival
The team brought the BBC micro:bit to the Windermere Science Festival in 2026, hosted at the Windermere Jetty Museum. This popular science event welcomed around 1000 children and families to learn all about the world of science through a wide range of interactive, hands-on activities and family-friendly talks.
Pride in STEM
Lorraine and Joe recently attended the Pride in STEM event at The Gregson Centre, where LGBTQ+ scientists and allies came together to celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ scientists to their fields. Over 100 visitors came along to visit the micro:bit stall, as well as many other exhibits from Lancaster's Faculties of Science and Technology and Health and Medicine.
pro2 2026
The 2026 pro2 network+ Device Prototyping and Production Summer School saw nearly 40 academics and entrepreneurs join the MIRL team for a week-long school dedicated to sharing best practice for the process of prototyping tech-based innovations.
pro2 2026
Practical sessions saw the return of coding workshops and the utilisation of the Engineering labs for hands-on soldering sessions, as well as the return of the ever-popular demo sessions and related innovation-based prizes of £250-£1000 for the best prototypes. This year’s winner of the £1000 grand prize was David Gabriel of Northeastern University for his “DigIt: a wearable digital tap dance interface for musical and interactive performance”.
