Research Overview

I study space weather, discovering how the solar wind drives changes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, triggering geomagnetic storms and aurorae. I analyse multi-decadal datasets of spacecraft plasma and magnetic field measurements and apply Extreme Value Theory to assess the risk of extreme “1-in-100 year” geomagnetic events.

I’m developing a Met Office forecasting service to warn of shortwave radio communications outages during solar flares, geomagnetic storms, and solar energetic particle events. Since 2010, I’ve also advised ESA and Airbus on the ionospheric impacts to the BIOMASS Earth Observation radar satellite. I’m currently examining “travelling ionospheric disturbances” detected in BIOMASS satellite images.
