PhD studentResearch Overview
I focus on the problems of organisational pedagogy in an international context shaped by unequal exchange. I draw on the praxis of Marxist and Pan-African traditions. My interests emerge out experiences as a student and then a teacher in environments underscored by competition and isolation.
Thesis Title
Revolution Teaches: A comparative study of the formation of cadre in revolutionary organisations.
Thesis Outline
Cadre based organisations are a form of organisation that have historically, and continue, to provide rich examples of resistance to imperialism and ecological breakdown. As such they are legitimate sources of knowledge and their ways of theorising, educating, and acting should be central to research on the issue.
The thesis is an investigation into how education takes place within revolutionary political organisations that are consciously structured and directed by a layer of its membership known as Cadre. It is a comparative study that takes as its point of the departure the existing and developing practices of the formation of cadre (cadrification) within organisations across different political and economic geographies.
I explore the curricular content, pedagogical style and practical activities used by cadre-based organisations through a qualitative approach grounded in the Marxist interpretive and analytical tools of Dialectical and Historical Materialism. I aim to understand the application of pedagogy in the daily practice of the cadre in the organisation. Therefore, I seek to use a materialist analysis to bear on the ¡®moral’ aspects of revolutionary political struggle. That is, I advance the argument that Derek Ford and Gy?rgy Luk¨¢cs have made that the formation of an “oppositional” form of education to Imperialism requires an organisational form.
