Sociology helps you make sense of how society works - and why it doesn’t work equally for everyone. At a time of rapid social, political, and environmental change, sociological thinking is more important than ever. At Lancaster, Sociology is at the heart of a wider conversation across the social sciences and humanities. You’ll explore critical social issues related to race, class, gender and inequality as well as the sociology of migration inequality, the environment and health, all while learning from research that connects Sociology with fields including Criminology, Film, Media and Politics. This means you can shape your degree around the topics that matter most to you, developing your sociological imagination across a range of real-world contexts.
From 2027/28, if you would like to combine Sociology with a particular area of interest, you will be able to study it as a joint degree with Criminology, Film, Media or Politics. These programmes allow you to develop strong sociological foundations while specialising in a second discipline, giving you the opportunity to explore social issues from multiple perspectives and tailor your studies to your interests and future goals.
